Q & A
- What should I do if my hands begin to hurt?
- Stop typing and see a doctor. Seriously.
- Why are there no difficult words in this test?
- The words are selected from a list of commonly used words. Some typing speed tests use words with difficult spellings, but I think that's unfair. I want to measure typing speed, not reading skill! The lack of difficult words in this test also enables this site to be used as a typing game for kids.
- What are CPM and WPM?
- They're short for Characters Per Minute, and Words Per Minute. The "raw CPM" is the actual number of characters you type per minute, including all the mistakes. "Corrected" scores count only correctly typed words. "WPM" is just the corrected CPM divided by 5. That's a de facto international standard.
- Does speed matter?
- Only if you're not fast enough. :)
- Got any statistics?
- Here's a histogram of CPM scores. To view the WPM equivalents, hover your
mouse pointer over the scores. All scores are grouped in ranges; these are at
the bottom. Per range, the height of the corresponding bar indicates how many
tests resulted in a score within that range. (Note: entries where the user used
the Enter key were not counted.)

Last updated: 28 February 2018 (n = 46475240)After finishing the test, you will get your percentile score. This indicates how fast you type compared to others who have taken the same test.
- What can I do to improve my score?
- They say that practice makes perfect. Apart from practicing, you can do a few things to get better at typing. Learn to touch type (force yourself to look at the screen, not the keys), get a better keyboard, improve your ergonomics by changing your display and furniture.
- In the web address "typing-speed-test.aoeu.eu", what does AOEU stand for?
- It doesn't stand for anything. It's for the Dvorak keyboard layout, what "ASDF" is for QWERTY keyboards. Switching from QWERTY to Dvorak is another way to improve comfort and reduce, or even avoid, typing-induced injuries. You can do that with your existing keyboard. Learning Dvorak takes approximately 10 hours, even if you're already very familiar with QWERTY.
- Can I link to your site?
- Yes, please do! You can also embed the typing test in your site. When you link to this site or embed the frame, don't forget to tell your visitors your CPM or WPM score so they can compare their scores.
- Who are you and what's your score?
- Hi, I'm Juerd. I use the Dvorak keyboard layout and I usually score around 620 CPM. My personal highscore is 674 CPM. While this is definitely faster than most people I know, there are (of course) people who are even faster - with any keyboard layout. Please send feedback about this site to aoeu@aoeu.nl.
